the trees? that's bad. the good news is, we've had no reports of widespread power outages across the divide. so i want to thank bill wolf for sending this in. that was his winter, actually. here's the radar. periods of showers will be with us tonight and tomorrow. in fact, we could see a wet snow flake in north and west of town tonight. we have had reports of snow flakes already. and you see livedoppler 9,000. some rain showers out in fairfax county, up 270 into frederick and down south as well. so sort of a damp commute on the way home, but nothing heavy. we will come back and talk about when we dry out and when it's going to feel like april once again. >> looking forward to it. okay, thank you, topper. just over a month ago, maryland and pennsylvania ski resorts packed up for the season. today, inches. scot broom has more on the

spring storm. >> well, what a wild day of weather it's been here in garrett county near deep creek lake in maryland. look at all the snow. a winter weather warning is out right now, potentially 6 to 10 inches of snow before this is all over. and what a weird reversal of fortune for this area. a lot of people here intiesed by temperatures, have launched their boats on to deep creek lake in anticipation of the summer season. this while the ski resort over at wisp, the chair lifts, they sit idol with nearly a foot of snow on the ground after a really difficult, warm winter here for the ski resort, which has not been open since st. patrick's day. >> i'll get my skis on now. >> this year, i should have swapped march for april. it can happen. thank goodness there's no leaves on the tree to break the power lines down. >> you never know what you're going to get. >> focus like to remind us that while we're in maryland,

really the climate here because of the altitude nearly a half mile high is a lot more like michigan than the mid atlantic. even so, schools were closed here in garrett county and with the snow still pounding down late today and temperatures predicted to drop well into the 20s tonight, school very much a question mark for tomorrow. in garrett county near deep creek lake and far western maryland, scott broom, 9news now. >> the kids aren't complaining. we want to know. submit your storm report. new developments tonight in the george zimmerman murder trial. the police chief who originally let zimmerman go free after he shot and killed trayvon martin offered his resignation. police chief bill lee had temporarily stepped aside last month when the state investigators took over the case. today, he decided to make it permanent, although as we said, the commissioner said not yet, at least. that decision came less than a

day after zimmerman was released from jail after posting bail. his lawyers are keeping his location secret. they are concerned about safety. >> but the concern is that there is such a ground swelling of opposition, or what they believe his position to be. >> zimmerman has yet to officially plead in court, but newly released documents show his attorney filed a written plea of not guilty days ago. his formal arraignment is set for may 6. >> new at 6:00, baltimore police make another arrest in the brutal beating of a tourist in the early morning hours after st. patrick's day. 20-year-old davis is expected to appear in court today for a bail hearing. investigators say she was part of a crowd of people who beat and robbed the 31-year-old man from arlington. the whole incident was recorded on a cell phone and went viral on the web. police made their first arrest using that video just over a week ago. that man remains in jail on

half a million dollars bail. investigators are still looking for two more suspects in the attack. >> recanted testimony other potential killers withheld from the defense. seven d. c. men convicted in 1984 are hoping a judge will let them out of prison. >> i'm bruce leshan at d.c. superior court. they have spent 27 years in prison for a particularly brutal murder. but today, seven defendants are back in the courtroom here, arguing that an avalanche of new information proves they were wrongly convicted. >> i'm happy to see my brother, it's 27 years. being incarcerated and for something he didn't do. >> she was a tiny mother of six, beaten, robbed, and sodomized with a pole off a garage in northeast d.c. police

focused almost immediately on a group of young men who hung out in a nearby park and called themselves the aith and age crew. then, 16-year-old clifton confessed in a video taped police interrogation. >> it was a little hard stick. >> he is now recanting and he is the leadoff witness as the defendants seek to convince a judge to grant them a new trial or declare them not guilty. roger clemens second perjury trial is underway. a jury of ten men and six women were seated. clemens lied to congress back in 2008 and he testified he didn't use steroids. the first witness takes the stand tomorrow. the full trial is expected to last four to six weeks. testimony now underway in

the john edwards trial. the former presidential candidate is accused of using campaign funds to hide his pregnant mistress during his run for the white house in 2008. dick brennan is in greensboro, north carolina, with details from the court. >> reporter: john edwards had a quick word for spectators as he arrived at the courthouse with his daughter, kate. edwards faces six criminal counts accusing him of violating campaign finance laws to conceal his extramarital affair. both sides gave their opening statements with the prosecution says edwards accepted a million dollars in illegal donations. the money paid for rielle hunter's travel, hotels, and medical care when she got pregnant. edwards' attorneys argue the money was a gift and since it never went into the candidate's campaign account, it could not have violated any campaign finance laws. in fact, edwards says he didn't know about the money. it was his campaign aide, andrew young, who handled the

funds. young arrived in court to be the first prosecution witness, but legal experts say he could have a credibility problem. for a while he pretended to be the father of hunter's baby and he may have broke broken the law. >> this case is so much about both what andrew young is saying and what john edwards is saying. it's the battle of credibility. >> edwards initially denied the affair. it ended his political career and it turned public opinion against him as his wife, elizabeth, lost her battle with cancer. the defense is expected to call edwards mistress to testify, but attorneys say they haven't decided whether to put edwards himself on the stand. the stakes are high. a possible 30 years in prison if he's convicted. in greensboro, north carolina, dick brennan for cbs news. >> judge presiding over this case was appointed to the bench in 2010 by president obama. she expects the proceedings to last about six weeks.

guys. all right anita. disappointing. that is how montgomery county's top cop describes the decision to reduce kevin coffee sentence for killing his three friends while driving drunk. he pleaded guilty last month for three counts of vehicular manslaughter. his initial sentence would have sent him to prison for 20 years. coffee appealed that last friday and a three judge panel agreed, they reduced his sentence to eight years. but during his appearance on 9news now at noon, tom manger says that decision could send the wrong message. >> i thought that 20 year sentence, it was tough, but i thought it sent the right message, that this was not going to be tolerated and i was hoping it would have some deterrent effect for anyone thinking about driving drunk in the future. i feel disappointed. >> prosecutors say that sentence reduction means coffee is eligible for parole next may. coming up at 7:00 on 9news now, how to survive a dog

all right, tell the truth. you ever get mad at that speed camera? sure you do. a man pulling up in that car right there, he was most certainly mad. mr. agitated climbs out, walks up to an empty van equipped with a speed camera and proceeds to empty his revolver.

i said it. it happened in the middle of the night. the shooter dressed only in a nice shirt, perhaps getting even for a speeding ticket. well, if police find him, that speeding ticket will be the least of his worries. >> no kidding. controversy is growing in virginia over a new marine base proposal over how residents of the city get home. the only municipality that is completed surrounded by a military base. according to inside nova, the base is proposing id cards for residents with their photo and name. part of getting that would require the base to run checks on each resident. people say it's not needed because they have a special car decal and show their id and security at the gate. a public hearing on the whole thing is set for wednesday night. up next, a pair of dogs pounce on a group of kids before a man comes to the rescue. and now neighbors want to know why the animals are still roaming the streets.

chaos caught on camera as a pair of dogs attacked three children and maul a man. now neighbors want to know why those dogs are still out there. >> i'm kristin fisher in northeast washington where people are very frustrated by the lack of progress after friday's vicious dog attacks. so far, the owners have not been identified. no charges have been filed and no one knows where the dogs are. watch as three children climb on top of a car to get away from two huge dogs. >> they were wowed. they were basically like they were trained to attack. >> this woman wants to remain unanimous, but she watched it all happen. in fact, watch here as her husband took on those two dogs with nothing but his bare hands and a small knife. >> seeing the kids, are going

headed south on 95, through springfield, back toward lorton, some light activity can be found. it is moving off to the south and east so you folks in southern charles county will see light activity in the next hour or so. right now, 43 in bethesda. just ridiculous. 43 in arlington and 42 in rockville and 43 in great falls. now, we are going to be drying out gradually. breezy and cold tonight. showers, maybe a wet snow flake tonight. already seen reports not too far from town. mountain snows continue and more sun on tuesday. much brighter day on tuesday. mostly cloudy tonight, breezy and cold. showers, maybe a wet flake. 36 to 42. winds south, southwest 10 to 20. tomorrow morning, get a jacket on the kid. breezy and cold. shower or flurry possible. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. all right, next seven days. temperatures start going up and as we go through the warming trend, we'll see the chance for showers go down a little bit. especially on wednesday.

now, 9sports with kristen berset. the best sports in town. before sunday's game against the bruins, several caps players said the last thing they wanted is to thin this series back to boston. fortunately, that's what happened. they squandered a chance to win game 6 at home and send the bruins home alone. instead, they are staring down the game 7. a must-win, again, a spot the caps are familiar with since the 2008 playoffs, the caps played four game seven's winning only one of them to advance. granted, the bruins won three game seven's last season in route to winning the stanley cup. >> it isn't easy.

it's a war out there. every game is a battle and you know, we've won in their building. they won in our building. that's just the way our hockey goes. >> when the pressure is on and you know, the games are tight, that's the games you want to be a part of. that's why you play the game. >> all right, on to game seven wednesday night in boston. if the caps do win -- >> the wizards haven't had an ideal season, but it's better than tonight's opponents. they lost 20 straight and on track for st worst winning percentage in league history. the wizards on the other hand, are embracing the role of spoiler. they won three straight games all over playoff contenders. the bulls, bucs, and heat. a win tonight would give them a season high win streak. too bad they are peeking at the wrong time. >> definitely improving. you can tell over the last few games, we are getting better.
